Neonatal Health

Scours is responsible for 75% of calf deaths within the first 3 weeks of life. Prevention is better than cure, however should disease or morbidity strike, there are a couple of neonatal health solutions to improve the infants fate.

Calf rearers recognise that calves are vulnerable to disease during these first weeks of life. After 3 weeks of age, they tend to be much stronger and can resist disease challenges.

Effective colostrum management (10% of bodyweight consumed within 6-12 hours of birth) and routine disinfection around rearing pens will curb the incidence of disease.

Inadequate colostrum management and lack of attention to routine pen hygiene leads to increasing pathogen load which puts pressure on the calf's naïve immune system and opens the door to disease and morbidity.

Electrolytes

An important aspect of neonatal health is electrolyte and fluid replacement in ill or stressed infants. Transport stress and enteric diseases (scours and diarrhoea) are common indications for electrolyte and rehydration therapy. Using recent advances in veterinary research in conjunction with Provimi's own research activities, ProviCo is able to assist rearers with effective rehydration strategies in stressed and dehydrated infant animals.

A range of balanced formulations to meet different severity levels of dehydrated infants have been formulated and available to market on APVMA approval.
